I think that this is an important passage because this is when he is talking to Stradlater about Jane. To me, he sounds very jealous that Stradlater for her and he didn't. I think that this is another important quality about Holden. I think that there is so much anger inside of him and he just doesn't know how to express it, and he saw this as an open opportunity and went for it.

Literary Luminary
"This next part I don't remember so hot. All I know is I got up from the bed, like I was going down to the can or something, and then I tried to sock him, with all my might, right smack in the toothbrush, so it would split his goddamn throat open. Only, I missed. I didn't connect. All I did was sort of get him on the side of the head or something. It probably would've hurt him a lot, but I did it with my right hand, and I can't make a good fist with that hand. On account of that injury I told you about." pg. 43

I completely agree with your interpretation, Amanda. I feel as though Holden is one who contains such a large amount of stress/anger/emotion inside of him, and therefore, he truly does not know how to relieve it. I can observe that when Holden sees a chance to let out his emotion by pushing his anger towards someone else, he takes the chance and brings it to extreme levels. Through my eyes, Holden needs to find a strategy as to how to control his anger and maintain his emotions at stable levels without exploding them on the people surrounding him. Possibly, Holden needs to find someone to speak with about his issues.
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a good passage too. Since I am the illustrator, I also chose to draw a picture of this scene when Holden's nose was bleeding. Holden deffinetly doesn't like that Stradlater is going out with Jane because he likes Jane, and also doesnt agree with their sexual behavior..
