Literary Luminary

"Look, I said. Here's my idea. How would you like to get the hell out of here? Here's my idea. I know this guy down in Greenwich Village that we can borrow his car for a couple of weeks. He used to go to the same school I did and he still owes me ten bucks. What we could do is, tomorrow morning we could drive up to Massachusetts and Vermont, and all around there see. It's beautiful as hell up there. It really is. I was getting excited as hell the more I thought of it, and I sort of reached over and took old Sally's goddam hand. What a goddam fool I was." pg. 132

I chose this passage because Holden is just extremely excited. I didn't fully understand why he was so excited, but he was and I think that Sally was kind of freaking out because he is never like this. He also doesn't really like Sally ad I was surprised that he was even mentioning something like this to Sally.

  1. I agree with your interpretation of this passage, Amanda. I feel as though Holden is beginning to grow out of his rough exterior at this point, and slowly transforming into an individual who speaks nicely and has care for others surrounding him. Possibly, Holden is realizing that being the "tough guy" won't get him too far in his years to come; especially pin-pointing his much needed communication skills.

I agree with what u said Amanda. Holden being excited and happy abut something is very rare in the book. I felt that at this point, Holden was showing something true about himself. He never shows any excitement or happiness because he always sees the wrong in life. He considers everything and everyone "fake" so seeing Holden like this is very different. Good passage Amanda.

  3. I agree with both of you. It's funny how tough the seems but it shows how what we first talked about how he seemed so tough and the rough interior etc. is finally fading and he is allowing his feelings to be show. This is a great passage Amanda.
