Literary Luminary

"You should see her. You never saw a little kid so pretty and smart in your whole life. She's really smart. I mean she's had all A's ever since she started school. As a matter of fact, I'm the only dumb one in the family. My brother D.B.'s a writer and all, and my brother Allie, the one that died, that I told you about, was a wizard." pg. 67

The only thing that Holden really loves, and will do anything for is his family. He loves them so much. When he talks about Phoebe, he gets so happy and excited and the same thing with Allie and D.B. Even though Allie has passed, and D.B. doesn't live with them anymore, he still talks about them so much. I truly think that he would do anything for Phoebe because he loves her so much.

  1. I find this to be an interesting passage, Amanda. I clearly understand your analysis of it, as well. While reading this, I wonder why Holden continues to act as such a "bully" to those surrounding him; except for his family. This truly shows that Holden has a good heart, and deep inside, he means no harm to anyone. Holden obviously recognizes those who mean the most to him, and appreciate the bond that he shares with them although some many not be present with him at the time. The ability in which Holden possesses, as he is able to feel love and care for those in his family, shows me that Holden appreciates being loved by others--and possibly, Holden doesn't realize that if he acted as a much nicer individual, people outside of his family would return love towards him as well.

  2. Clearly Holden has been through a lot with his family. His brothers death also has taken a toll on him and I think that this affects his character in the story. He loves his family so much and would do anything for them which is what we see from the way he speaks about them. If he loves them this much, I think that the Allie's death is one of the reasons he continues to bully people around and keep a pessimistic view on life. I understand what you meant Jenna and I agree with what you said about him not realizing that if he treats people better, he would be happier in his life.
